Robert Rahn, rrahn@lhfmissions.org To: Confessional Lutherans in Missionary Boldness, CLiMB@CAT41.org 12/4/00 For Immediate Release By Rev. Robert L. Rahn, LHF Executive Director 1-800-554-0723 LHF Translation Wins First Place A volume translated and published by the Lutheran Heritage Foundation achieved the top award at a Christian Book Exposition held in St. Petersburg, Russia, on October 27-28, 2000. The award was granted in the category of technical theological texts. Ms. Marina Solodova, LHF Moscow Branch Director, prepared the exhibition and submitted several new titles for competition. Her name was the first one called in the awards ceremony and the book that achieved the status was THE FOOLISHNESS OF GOD by Dr. Siegbert Becker, published by Northwestern Publishing House. The book presents the place of reason in the theology of Martin Luther. Rev. Robert L. Rahn, LHF Executive Director, and Mr. Konstantin Komarov, LHF Vice President of the Russia Region, were present for the ceremony. "This is a distinct honor for the LHF," Rev. Rahn said, "and also fitting in view of the fact that the author of the work is a relative of the family who endured persecution in the 50's for his faithfulness to the Word of Truth. This type of commitment to the Scriptures and the Lutheran confessions can also be the hallmark of Lutheranism in Russia if sufficient access to theological works and materials are provided," Rev. Rahn remarked. The prestigious award involved competition from more than 50 entrants. In addition to the criteria of it having to be a new work since the last exhibition, there are several other selection criteria, including quality of translation, general appearance, subject of broad reader interest, and quality of printing, using standards of Russian book printing. The six exhibition judges prefer local authors, but in spite of this, the LHF book was outstanding enough to be considered. Marina Solodova reported that immediately following the ceremony, the full supply of the winning volume was quickly exhausted. In 1999 two LHF published books also received the exhibition's top award in the category of theological volumes: THE BOOK OF CONCORD and J. T. Mueller's CHRISTIAN DOGMATICS. World Wide Printing of Minsk, Belarus printed all of the books. The LHF currently has over 50 volumes published in the Russian language, several which are already in their second and third printing. Another 200 volumes appear in 45 other languages in over 50 regions of the world. The LHF total print volume is now approaching nearly 1.5 million copies. All books have been distributed free of charge; although the book exhibition has led to arrangements of books being requested to be put on sale at discounted prices in local bookstores for increased circulation and readership. "The LHF has a way of underestimating the contributions of over 200 translators, editors, theological reviewers, and staff around the world," Rev. Rahn said, "and this gives us reason to pause and thank God for the workers and the work." Preparations are already under way for the exhibition next year. The LHF submission will feature a book currently at the press in Ekaterinburg, THE HISTORY OF LUTHERANISM IN EKATERINBURG, compiled by a local author, The Rev. Sergei Glushkov, LHF Branch Director, Ekaterinburg, Siberia. The book traces the presence of Lutheranism in Ekaterinburg from 300 years ago and features St. Peter and Paul Lutheran Church, now newly registered in the city with Rev. Glushkov and the Rev. Alexey Trapeznikov serving as spiritual leaders of the congregation. It is our contention that those who truly hold to the ~Book of Concord~ as the pure exposition of Holy Scripture and the true confession of the Christian faith are also the most zealous supporters of the preaching of the Gospel in every corner of the world and, as such, ought to be kept thoroughly informed of how those endeavors are faring and shown how they may be rightly carried out without the destruction of orthodox doctrine and practice that some within the pale of Lutheranism now advocate.
