The word 'quia' is simply Latin for 'because'. A quia subscription to the Lutheran Confessions indicates that one holds to their teaching because it is in full agreement with Holy Scripture. This is in contrast to a 'quatenus subscription', 'quatenus' being Latin for 'insofar as'--that is, "I hold to the Lutheran Confessions 'insofar as (I see them to) agree with Scripture." To say that one subscribes 'quatenus' is to say that one does not really subscribe at all.
